November is one of my favorite times of year to go riding in the Hill Country of Texas. Everything is green, skies are clear and the temperatures are perfect with cool mornings and warm afternoons. The Lone Star Section’s visit to Burnet Texas on November 2nd to the 4th did not disappoint! 16 Lone Stars made the drive/ride to this beautiful Hill Country town just south of Lake Buchanan, for the fine roads and the annual vintage bike show held at the Hill Country Motorheads museum just west of town.

On Thursday afternoon (November 2nd), the group did the short ride from Burnet to the Longhorn Cavern State Park that was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1971. The 650-acre park covers a portion of a limestone cavern system that runs for 10+ miles all the way to Lake Buchanan. Our intrepid group of riders took the walking tour of the cavern, led by an excellent guide who made the million-year-old rocks and formations come to life! After the tour we returned to the hotel along curvy Park Road 4 meandering through the hills around Inks Lake.

The group then met up at the Hill Country Motorheads Motorcycle Museum in Burnet, for a pizza dinner and a screening of the Phillip Vincent documentary Speed is Expensive. Pat and Janell at the museum extended that wonderful Texas hospitality by opening their ‘man cave’ for us and even buying us pizzas! Great folks and big supporters of the Lone Stars. Making it to the screening were: Jonathan Chaikin, Peter Allen, Dan Farr, Dave Roberson, Shana Brader, Hollis Lewis, Laurent Fouillet, Paul Kopyar, Richard Green, Dave Hartner, Jim Alyesworth and Mark Scott.

Friday morning dawned clear and sunny with the group (now including Vincenzo Murphy who drove up from Austin) heading south through quiet roads along Cow Creek then RM1431 along Lake Travis to my home in Volente for a water break and a garage crawl. Peter Allen’s Shadow was making a disconcerting noise that he traced to a damaged generator drive gear. He removed the gear, and went ‘old school’ kickstart for the rest of the weekend as his charging system was now out of commission.

The group had lunch at a food truck park and returned north to Burnet via Marble Falls. Afternoon temperatures in the low 70’s: perfect for our 130+ mile loop! Some hotel parking lot cleaning/fettling was followed by a happy hour at the hotel poolside, then dinner for the 14 of us at the nearby Mama’s Café. We came up with some cool ideas for rides over the next year, including a possible group trip to Alabama for the Barber Vintage Festival next fall.

Saturday 4th was another beautiful day with the group leaving for the ride back up Park Road 4. We took some photos at the lookout and then headed for a short loop along the edge of Lake Buchanan, then on to the Motorheads museum at about 11:30 for their annual Texas Revival Vintage Motorcycle Show.

What a fantastic collection of bikes at the show, from 5 pre-1915 models to road race bikes, dirtbikes, customs and specials from all parts of the globe. Road racing legend Kevin Schwantz was there with his family, including his uncle Darryl who was a successful pro racer in his own right. Darryl even brough out several of his old racers for the fans to check out. Several other Lone Stars joined in the fun including Corey Levenson, Steve Tufts, Butch Hudkins and John Tish. We had 10 bikes in the Vincent parking area, with another 4 officially in the show! Lone Star Corey Levenson put his always-great photos in an album here: https://coreylevenson.smugmug.com/Things-with-Wheels/2023-Texas-MC-Revival/
